7 Signs Your Steering or Suspension Needs Attention

Steering and suspension parts wear gradually, which means drivers often adapt to a vehicle that no longer handles the way it should. By the time the change feels dramatic, a tire or another component may already be paying the price.

1. Clunks over bumps

Loose ball joints, sway-bar links, control-arm bushings, strut mounts and other components can make knocking or clunking sounds as the suspension moves.

2. The vehicle wanders

If you are constantly correcting the steering on a straight road, worn steering parts, alignment, tire issues or suspension wear may be involved.

3. Uneven tire wear

Feathering, cupping or one-sided wear can be a clue that the tire is not staying planted correctly. Do not assume an alignment alone will fix wear caused by loose components.

4. Steering feels loose

Extra play, delayed response or a steering wheel that feels vague deserves an inspection because tie rods, ball joints, steering gear and other parts affect vehicle control.

5. Excessive bouncing or nose dive

Worn shocks and struts can reduce control over body movement, especially over dips, during braking or on rough roads.

6. New vibration

Vibration can come from tires, wheel bearings, driveline components or suspension issues. Where and when you feel it helps narrow the source.

7. A lift kit changed the way the vehicle drives

Changing ride height changes geometry. If a lifted truck pulls, wears tires quickly or feels unstable, the installation and related steering and suspension components should be checked.
