Diesel Care During Winter

Winter is tough on diesel engines, and preventive maintenance becomes even more important when temperatures drop. A few checks before the first hard freeze can prevent a no-start, protect the fuel system and make the truck more dependable all season.

1. Check the fuel filter

Cold weather can expose a restricted or overdue fuel filter quickly. Keeping the filter in good condition helps maintain fuel flow and reduces the chance of hard starts or stalling.

2. Use fuel suited for winter conditions

Diesel fuel can gel when temperatures fall far enough. Buy fuel from a high-volume station and follow the vehicle and fuel supplier guidance for winterized fuel or anti-gel treatment when conditions call for it.

3. Test the batteries

Cold weather reduces available battery power while a cold diesel engine needs plenty of cranking speed. Test weak batteries before winter and keep terminals clean and tight.

4. Inspect the cooling system

Coolant protects against both overheating and freezing. Check level, condition, leaks and freeze protection before winter, especially on a work truck that sees long drives or towing.

5. Use the correct engine oil

Oil that is too thick for the temperature can make cold starts harder. Use the viscosity and specification recommended for the engine and climate.

6. Pay attention to glow-plug or intake-heater performance

If cold starts are getting longer, rougher or smokier, the starting-aid system deserves a look before the coldest mornings arrive.

7. Check tires, pressure and tread

Air pressure drops as temperatures fall. Proper inflation and healthy tread help with braking, handling and fuel economy on cold Colorado roads.
